The British MMA community has been shocked by the news that Ross Mason is in hospital in a critical condition after he was found lying in the street with serious head injuries on Saturday morning.

Mason, nicknamed The Boss, has been one of the UK’s most popular welterweights since he started his career in 2002. Based in the town of Redditch in the Midlands Mason, who has two young children, received a hero’s welcome when he fought Ross Pointon at Cage Rage 26 in Birmingham this past May. In his last bout, he handily out-punched Scott Jansen over three rounds at Cage Rage 28. Liked by both fans and his fellow competitors, Mason has never had a bad word to say about anyone and this terrible turn of events cast a shadow over Saturday’s Cage Gladiators show in Liverpool. Marc Goddard, a close friend and training partner of Mason, withdrew from his scheduled light-heavyweight title fight to go to the hospital.

The local police have issued the following statement:

Appeal after man found with serious head injuries

Police are appealing for information after a man was found in the Woodrow area of Redditch on Saturday morning (4 October) with serious head injuries. The man, confirmed as 31-year-old Ross Mason from Redditch, was found shortly after 7am in Rushock Close by two men and a woman. He was taken by ambulance to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch where he remains in a critical but stable condition. Detective Inspector Jon Marsden says, “It is imperative that we establish exactly how Mr Mason came to have these injuries and we are appealing to any witnesses or anyone with information who has not yet spoken to police to pass this on as soon as they can.
“We would also like to thank those who found Mr Mason on Saturday morning as without their intervention, he may not have received the vital medical care he needed.”

Police are urging anyone with information to call Redditch CID on 08457 444 888 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
